Everyone has those few shirts in their closet, the ones that feature a brand or company that maybe you don’t know that much about but hey, it was free. This was a shirt that was given out at some convention you attended or maybe it was given away as a prize. But when you actually see the shirt, it’s really nothing special. Just a plain ol’ shirt that you wear when it’s laundry day or you are out working in the yard. At Documedia, we know this is a reality but it really is a shame. What a missed opportunity. Apparel branding or marketing is a very popular but an easily misunderstood venue. So often people think of apparel branding in the terms of Field of Dreams – if you wear it, they will come. But that just isn’t true.
When designing some form of apparel make sure you are asking yourself these questions:
• What image are you trying to show here? Do you want something that is hip and trendy? Do you want it to be more modern and clean? All of these questions will help in the design as well as what kind of material to use with your apparel
• What colors or design elements are best associated with your company? If you are looking to affirm your brand you don’t want to choose something that is way off your corporate color scheme. If all you signage is in red you wouldn’t do all your apparel in green (unless your Santa and then maybe this is a good idea)
• How often will this be worn? If this is a staff shirt they may be wearing it daily and choosing a material that is hard to clean may not be a good option.
You may also want to look into what new options are available to you. At Documedia we also offer dye sublimated clothing. This process allows us to create an image, print it on transfer paper and through pressure and heat transfer the image onto the clothing. Because the image does not need to be any particular design we can create designs that cover the entire shirt and create a unique and new way of showing off your brand.
