Millennials were the first generation to grow up using social media on a regular basis.
They were the first to use Facebook, and their opinions on a particular platform can mean the longevity of that platform or its death. (Poor Myspace). Social media allows us to have a constant feed of new interactions and gives everyone a platform to share their experiences and thoughts. For a business, it is crucial to utilize social media. But not to post occasionally or as an afterthought, it needs to be done well. A sporadic or not thought out social media presence can be more damaging than not having one at all.
Because everyone has access to share their experiences, they also have access to share their experiences with your brand or business. This is a double-edged sword. In some respects, there is nothing better than word of mouth marketing. But if it is a negative review, a business needs to reach out quickly to help the customer have a positive interaction. Having an active social media account and regularly checking when your company is being discussed is critical.
Another exciting aspect of social media use is the rise of influencers.
These are not your typical celebrities, but instead, these are housewives who have started a blog or a local expert who creates videos on youtube. These influencers are showing to be twice as effective at driving interest in a brand over a TV commercial or celebrity endorsement. Millenials are disenfranchised and long for real connections. These influencers share large parts of their lives and stories with their followers and regularly engage with their followers.
Millenials care about these types of connections, and social media allows those connections to happen. Utilizing influencers or speaking directly to your clients allows you as a company to be able to interact with your clients and to build relationships that you’ve never been able to have before.
