April is a great month.
For many, it means that spring is finally in full swing and you can start breaking out your shorts and enjoying some sunny weather. But did you also know that April is National Volunteer Month and is to be celebrated not only by spending some time volunteering but also appreciating those who regularly volunteer?
If you’ve never volunteered before, you may be thinking why you should start?
That it is a fine way for others to spend their time but you are very busy or maybe just don’t see the purpose. The surprising reason that you should volunteer is that it has been known to change people’s lives. That time allows the person to step outside of yourself and to see beyond your issues, desires, and needs and to meet the needs of someone else. It allows you to create personal connections. Our society has increasingly become one that will enable us to stay disconnected through the guise of social media and computer interaction. But it lacks the personal touch of real empathy and genuinely being there when someone needs you. Many people have reported that volunteering gave them a sense of purpose that they lacked in their paying jobs or their immediate relationships. It has the possibility of being a compelling interaction.
At Documedia we want to support the nonprofit organizations that make these experiences possible. So we regularly donate to such organizations like the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Boys and Girls Club, and Wounded Warrior Project to name a few.
